Getting back to my roots in painting and drawing with the Intimate Universe exhibition
Over the course of 18 months or so starting late in 2017 I gave myself permission to “play” with various mediums, returning to my earliest art making in printmaking and drawing. At that time I was hiking and walking very regularly alone and with friends into the ‘White’ Mountains in both Maine and New Hampshire. Hiking days of 5-10 miles fed my inspiration which led me to the “intimate universe”. Walking over roots and rocks, seaweed and sand had me observing my footfalls and all the intimate beauty on a scale of the microcosm. Knowing our place as a speck within the greater macrocosm of the universe.
Once I had some work behind me, I gave myself a goal of an exhibition, I lined up gallery space and I set out to bringing an idea to fruition with the support from Maine Arts Commission’s project grant. Completing this work would not have been possible without time spent in 2019 at Haystack’s Studio Based Residency. I took great pleasure in once again grappling with ideas both old and new while making and re-inventing my studio practice. The Intimate Universe exhibition laid the ground work for my current studio practice of painting.
Thanks for scrolling through the images below (l and r arrow tabs), all taken at the 2019 Intimate Universe summer exhibition at Zero Station. Many of these initial works represent seeds of ideas that I am working on still to date (2024).
